he Tea Party movement is a political movement in the United States that emerged after the election of President Barack Obama and disenchantment with Republican politicians via a series of locally and nationally-coordinated protests.[1][2][3] The protests were partially in response to several Federal laws: the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008,[4] the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009,[5][6] and a series of health care reform bills.[7]

The name “Tea Party” is a reference to the Boston Tea Party of 1773—a protest by American colonists against various acts by the British monarchy which, among other things, attempted to establish a monopoly on the importation of tea into the colonies by giving a cut on re-importation tax imposed on the East India Company.[8] Tea Party protests have invoked themes, images, and slogans similar to those used during the pre-revolutionary period in American history.[9][10][11]

The movement has no central leadership but is a loose affiliation of smaller local groups.[12] The movement’s primary concerns include, but are not limited to, cutting back the size of government,[13] lowering taxes,[14] reducing what it considers wasteful spending,[15] reducing the national debt and federal budget deficit,[13] and adhering to the United States Constitution,[16] among other issues. The movement’s members have been known to speak out on a wide variety of other issues, such as national defense,[17] illegal immigration,[18] etc.

Offshore drilling typically refers to the discovery and development of oil and gas resources which lie underwater. Most commonly, the term is used to describe oil extraction off the coasts of continents, though the term can also apply to drilling in lakes and inland seas.

Offshore drilling presents environmental challenges, especially in the Arctic or close to the shore. Controversies include the ongoing US offshore drilling debate.

There are many different types of platforms for offshore drilling activities, from shallow-water steel jackets and jackup barges, to floating Semi-submersibles and drillships able to operate in very deep waters.

Proposition 19, also known as the Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010, is a California ballot proposition which will be on the November 2, 2010 California statewide ballot. It legalizes various marijuana-related activities, allows local governments to regulate these activities, permits local governments to impose and collect marijuana-related fees and taxes, and authorizes various criminal and civil penalties.[1] In March 2010 it qualified to be on the November statewide ballot.[2] It requires a simple majority in order to pass, and would take effect the day after the election.[3] Yes on 19 is the official advocacy group for the initiative.

Proponents[4] of Proposition 19 argue that it would help with California’s budget shortfall and redirect law enforcement resources to more dangerous crime, while opponents[5] claim that its gaps and flaws will have serious unintended consequences on public safety, workplaces, and federal funding. As of October 2010[update], even if the proposition is passed, the sale of marijuana will remain illegal under federal law via the Controlled Substances Act.[6][7][8]

On January 3, 2009, he was named by Colorado Governor Bill Ritter to fill the seat in the United States Senate vacated by United States Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar on January 20. Since taking office on January 21, 2009, he has stated that he will seek election at the end of his term in 2010.

Bills and policy positions

Healthcare reform

Bennet voted in support of the healthcare reform bill signed by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010. In November 2009, when the bill was still working its way through Congress, Bennet stated that he would support healthcare reform even if it meant losing the election in a CNN interview. In his speeches on the floor, Bennet has emphasized reports by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office to argue that a vote for health care reform is fiscally responsible.

Immigration

Bennet has been a strong supporter of immigration reform. In September 2009, Bennet cosponsored the DREAM Act (S. 729), which proposed amending the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 by giving residency to aliens enrolled in higher education programs. Bennet has also stated that the country is in need of comprehensive immigration reform and that even bills like DREAM will not be adequate to solve US immigration problems.

Fiscal responsibility and financial regulation

In February 2009, Bennet voted for $787 billion stimulus package, which was added $787 billion to to fiscal deficit in 2009. In August 2009, Bennet sponsored a bill which placed spending caps on the federal government. Bennet is also a cosponsor, and outspoken supporter of the Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO, S.1600) Act, which would require Congressional proposals which requires spending to state in detail where the funds come from. Bennet has also been a strong supporter of financial regulatory reform, stating that he believes strong regulatory reform is necessary to America’s future economic well-being, and that the proposed legislation recently unveiled by Senator Chris Dodd’s Banking Committee (of which Bennet is also a member) is a “strong start”.

Alternative energy

In December 2009, Bennet cosigned a letter to Senate majority leader Harry Reid and President Obama urging them to consider supporting the Solar Manufacturing Jobs Creation Act (S.2755). The letter, signed by the bill’s sponsor and cosponsors, explained that this bill could create as many as 10,000 new jobs. The letter further stated concern that China and other countries are passing the US in production of alternative energy, and that this bill would provide an opportunity to reduce that trend.
